Greetings to all the Members, Commanding Officer’s and Chapters of Region Fifteen,

Today begins the official election voting for the position of the R15 Regional Coordinator and I humbly seek your support and vote to be your next Regional Coordinator.

The Region finds itself at a turning point and it must now decide how to face the challenges we are already experiencing and those challenges yet to come.

To start off, I wish to introduce myself to those who may not know me or think they know me. I was born in Fall River, MA and raised in RI since the age of two. Most of my time in RI, I lived on Aquidneck Island, living in Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth until my family moved back to Newport where I started and complete High School at Roger’s High School. Upon graduation I enlisted in the US Army to become an Infantryman.

My military service expands over a period of 25 years, during which I was assigned to numerous leadership positions from Rifleman, Radio Telephone Operator (RTO), Fire Team Leader, Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant and even acting Platoon Leader. During my service I was a Parachute Infantryman assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division where I served in two combat deployments, Operation Just Cause (Panama) and Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm (Saudi Arabia and Iraq). I also served in South Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division for 1 year and upon completion of my tour, I returned to the 82nd Airborne Division and a few years later I was chosen to under go the US Army Drill Instructor Course and follow-on assignment at Ft. Jackson, SC.

During this tour I decided to leave the Army for a civilian life to concentrate on my family, so I returned to Newport where I worked at both a local Ace Hardware store and a bagel shop. But after a year, I realized the military life is where I was supposed to be, and I enlisted in the RI Army National Guard as an Infantryman but soon later transferred to the FL National Guard. There I served as an Infantry Soldier during my weekend duty and I was a Civil Service Technician working in the same unit during the week which my duties were the Company Administrative Specialist (Maintained unit personnel records, awards, promotions, transfers in and out of the unit, and unit retention NCO for about 80 Soldiers).

Two years later, I applied for an Active Duty National Guard position in Wilmington NC which I was chosen to be the Battalion Commander’s Bradley Fighting Vehicle Gunner and during the week, I was the Assistant Human Resources Sergeant which my responsibilities were much of the same as mentioned above but at a larger scale for about 800 Soldiers.

In 2004 my Brigade (30th HBCT) was deployed to Iraq in which I was promoted to SFC assigned as a Platoon Sergeant. Upon our return I was assigned as a Readiness NCO (which I was responsible for 2 armories, 140 Soldiers and equipment worth more than 1 million dollars.  In 2009 the unit was deployed again to Iraq, I was reassigned to be the Support Battalion Senior Human Resources Sergeant which I over saw a section of 9 Soldiers and we serviced 1400 Soldiers dealing with all personnel issues, medical issues, finance issues, and retention, etc. After my return in 2010 I submitted for my retirement but instead I was asked to supervise the NC National Guard, J-1/G-1 Army Personnel Systems. I was responsible for 10 Soldiers and the State level personnel databases, records, for over 34,000 Soldiers across the State of NC.  In 2012 I decided it was time to retire and I officially retired in January 2013.

During this time I have been awarded over 31 medals and ribbons including the Bronze Star Medal, 2x Meritorious Service Medals, 5x Army Commendations, 6x Army Achievements, and several badges such as the Combat Infantry Badge with Star, Master Parachutist, Pathfinder, Air Assault, Drill Instructor Badge and the Career Counselor Badge.

My STARFLEET background starts off when I attended my first chapter meeting in November 1991 and my official membership in January 1992. In the past 22 years in STARFLEET I have served on 5 chapters and of those 5 I started 3 chapters from scratch and served as CO on 4. I currently command the USS Helen Pawlowski since 2012.

My activities over the past 22 years has been vast with experiences. Besides the above mentioned chapters, I served as the R1 Quartermaster, Director-STARFLEET Armed Forces Program, R2 Publicity Officer, Assistant STARFLEET CompOps, SFA Director -School of Tactical Operations, SFA Director-Flag Officer School, SFA Director-STARFLEET Officer’s Leadership College, Assistant Director-The Gorn Academy, Assistant Director-SFA Degree Program, Assistant Director-SFA BOCP, Commandant STARFLEET Academy, 120th MSG OIC, 119th MACO TL, 1st BDE S1, SFSO Assistant Deputy Director (Support), SFSO Assistant Director, R1 Publications Officer (R1 Newsletter), R1 RDC Communications (RC Newsletter), 1st BDE Webmaster, SFSO Webmaster, and the R15 Recognition Officer.

My basic platform for my candidacy for R15 RC is “Back to the Basics”.

Back to the basics does not mean moving backwards, but just the opposite, moving the region forward by going back to the basics of a region organization, activities and communications. In some of those areas, we as a region, and a thank you to Jerry and Peg for moving things along have already begun, such as the R15 Website and the R15 Awards Program.  I propose that the RE15 Webmaster be removed from under the R15 Communication Department and make its own regional department. This helps the Communications Department to concentrate on social media, publicity and a Regional Newsletter.

The Regional Summit or Conference needs work. One thing I plan to do if elected to be your next RC is to create a R15 Summit/Conference Guide to help any R15 member/chapter on the basic steps and procedures to sponsor such events. Hopefully with written guidance and more detailed explanations, more members/chapters will want to step forward and host what should be our regions most important annual event.  I too agree that the timing is too late to plan for a full weekend summit event and I fully support the current proposed regional get together that Franklin and Larry have proposed.

Another project that I would like to complete within the first 6 months of my administration if elected, is to publish a Regional Handbook that goes into details on the day to day operations and procedures. This Handbook would define Region 15, define the Region Leadership and their duties and responsibilities. Define the Regional Organizational Structure, Define the purpose and responsibilities of the Regional Captain’s Board, but also to establish policy for the unassigned region members. Just because they do not belong to a chapter, does not mean they cannot participate, earn awards and even promotions.

Lastly, if I receive the honor to be your next RC, I would like to create a new position that to me is vital for our region, and that is a Region 15 Historian.  The region has a great history, but the problem is only a few here and there know pieces of it, but no one has been able to put it all together. Our history is what defined us as a Region, the good and the bad, and if we are to learn from our mistakes, we need to know what those were and how we got to where we are today.

I thank you for your time and consideration and ask for your support and vote to be your next Regional Coordinator.

Greetings Region 15

A lot of people spend time talking about what’s wrong with STARFLEET. While we can all agree that there are things that need to change, I would like to focus on what’s right about STARFLEET. To me, STARFLEET should be the embodiment of what’s best about humanity. We are a celebration of the dream inspired by Gene Roddenberry for a better, brighter future. Star Trek has played a huge role in shaping my character. I believe it taught me at a young age to always stand for what is right and to never back down in the face of the unknown. To always seek the answers, and that there is no such thing as a no-win situation. These are things that I have carried throughout my adult life.

I am supportive of the work being done by the current administration to streamline STARFLEET. I firmly believe that any fleet-wide department needs to bring something to the organization. We don’t need departments that exist just to exist, we need departments that engage the membership and add to the experience of being part of STARFLEET. We also need to ensure that we are in strict compliance with the law in regards to using other people’s intellectual property and trademarks. I support their efforts to utilize marketing and branding as that will go a long way towards improving our image and getting the word out that STARFLEET is here to welcome Star Trek fans from all over the globe to a long running and well-established fan organization.

I also support the work being done here in Region 15. The awards program is off to a great start and the new region website looks great. That’s not to say there’s not more work to be done. What we really need as a Region is a double shot of passion. I hope to ignite that passion in our current membership. I want to see Region 15 leading STARFLEET in testing innovative ideas and programs. We need to become the change that we want to see in STARFLEET. As part of that goal, bringing in new members and encouraging them to pitch in their talents to make STARFLEET better will be important. It’s easy to bring in new members if you are excited about what you are doing and are having fun. Excitement is contagious.

While my methods on the USS Narragansett may not work for everyone, we do have lots of great ideas that can be adapted to other ships. We have enjoyed explosive growth of our chapter over the past year using simple techniques that can be customized and replicated by other chapters. A big part of our success is drawing in new talent and giving people the tools they need to succeed. That’s why leadership positions on the Narragansett require academy courses around leadership. Officer’s positions come with assignments and failure to complete the assignments have consequences.

We also have programs for the members who are looking for something else. It might be that just want to come to meetings, or they want to participate in away missions, or have fun with RPG missions in chat, or talk about the latest Trek collectibles on Facebook, or discuss the latest episode of Discovery, or write for the website or the newsletter, or even just hang out and chat with the other members of the crew about Star Trek Online or life in general. We are also developing a robust program for our cadets that incorporates the resources at STARFLEET Academy as well as other STEM education. All of these are available on the USS Narragansett right now, and we are constantly looking for ways to innovate or improve our offerings for the crew. I think we can do the same for the Region, and I think we can do it together.

If I am elected Regional Coordinator for Region 15, not only would I represent R15’s best interests with the Admiralty Board, I plan to appoint a very organized Regional staff who will be expected to utilize their talents to make the Region the best in STARFLEET, and hold them accountable for completing what they volunteer to accomplish. I will post positions and look for applicants that meet the needs of said positions. I will be looking for great ideas and people who can put them into action. The region is more than the sum of its Commanding Officers, it’s the sum of all it’s members. We can do great things if we all work together.

Proudly In Service

Hello Region 15,

As you’re now reading this we have moved from the Nomination to the Voting phase of the Regional Coordinator Election. In case any of you haven’t met me I’m Corey Grant and I’d like to be your next Regional Coordinator. I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a bit about myself and what I’d like to do as your Regional Coordinator.

The about me part.

I’ve been a member of Starfleet for just about 30 years, and a fan of Star Trek it since before I knew there were other fans. During my 30 years, I’ve been a member of 4 different chapters. I’ve also started a chapter, the USS Darwin, so I understand firsthand the work involved in getting a chapter up and running. Beyond having been both a Commanding Officer and Executive Officer of a chapter, I’ve served as Recruitment Officer and I’m currently the Region 15 Treasurer.

In the working world I have spent most of my time in the IT sector. While working at a technical support desk my job was outsourced overseas and I took that chance to try something different. I went to school to become a pastry chef. After completing the Pastry Arts program at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts I worked as a wedding cake decorator, managed a café, and ran my own cupcake and custom cake company, Wicked Little Cakes. Although I love baking I missed working with computers. I returned to school, first to Bunker Hill Community College for an Associates in Computer Forensics where I graduated second in my class. Just recently I completed my Bachelor’s degree from University of Massachusetts Boston in Information Technology with minors in both Digital Forensics and Network Administration.

What I’d like to do as your Regional Coordinator.

In the past year we’ve seen quite a bit of growth in the region, and I’d like to see that growth continue. To aid in further growth it’s my hope to expand the Recruiting department to include one or two people from each chapter. I think we all need to remember when we recruit it’s not just for one Chapter, or even just for our Region, new members are joining Starfleet as a whole.

I’d also like to see the regional newsletter return. The newsletter would let chapters inside the region see what each other is doing, possibly give each other ideas on chapter activities and maybe inspire those outside our region. A newsletter also gives us a history to look at and remind us of the fun and work we’ve done.

This year it’s most likely too late to do a weekend Regional Summit, but not to have a one-day event. It seemed that people were happy where we had the Summit at the VFW in North Easton. For now I think we should continue to use the VFW till we find a hotel or other venue where we can return to a weekend long event.

One of the things that our former Regional Coordinator Jerry did was to spread out the regional staff jobs. That’s something I intend to maintain. By spreading the jobs out amongst the different Chapters it helps people to see we’re all working together as a Region. This also avoids the sense that a single Chapter is running everything. Just as no Chapter is a single person, no Region is a single Chapter.

Each Chapter gets a vote in the Regional Coordinators election, I hope this brief glimpse of who I am and what I’d like to do will convince you to ask your Chapter’s Commanding Officer to cast that vote for me.

Thank You.

Good morning,

It is after much deliberation that I must announce my resignation as Regional Coordinator effective June 1, 2018.

This was not an easy decision to make. I sought this position, not because I wanted “to be in charge” of anything, but rather because I saw a way that I could assist this Region and this organization that has given much to me over the last 25+ years. I came in with some great ideas and a lot of enthusiasm. Many of those ideas have been implemented and I think it has helped the Region grow stronger.

It is not because of anyone or anything on the FLEET side that I have chosen to make this decision. Since shortly after taking office, I have been dealing with a series of difficulties in most aspects in my life; my health and that of family, major changes at work along with an increase in stress and hours, and many other things.

The continued stress has been wearing and it makes it increasingly difficult to give STARFLEET the proper time and respect that it deserves. As such, my duty is clear.

While I was not able to accomplish everything that I had set out to, I feel that I will leave the Region in better shape than when I started.

I believe that there should be enough time for a full election cycle to take place between now and June 1, so that we can allow for a smooth transition to the next Regional Coordinator.

I want to thank the Regional staff for stepping up and taking on their positions to help Region 15 to prosper. We have had some ups and downs, but I would like to believe that there have been more ups than downs.

Thank you all for giving me the chance to serve. I am hopeful that when the current stresses lessen, that I will be able to serve in a higher capacity once more. Until then, I will be stepping back so that STARFLEET does not add stress, but rather is a way to relax and enjoy the fandom that we all love.

With respect and my sincere thanks,
